Steps of the Rehab Admissions Process
The first step in treatment is admissions. When you call PAATC or another drug and alcohol rehab facility, you have officially begun your recovery.
Below are the essential steps involved in your admission to rehab, the very first steps on the road to recovery and wellness.
Contact an Addiction Rehab Facility
Make contact with an addiction rehab facility and not just one. Shop around. Learn which programs align with your values, comfort level, and needs. Do you want holistic options, faith-based treatment, single-sex programs, or any particular therapy modalities?
The initial conversations you have with staff at rehab facilities will be informative and should help you narrow down your ideal options. It is a great idea to have support in this process. Ask someone you trust to help you narrow down your options to three or four and hold space for you during the initial outreach by being on the phone line with you or accompanying you on a visit.
Your Intake Screening
Your intake screening, which may occur in more than one phone call, will include pertinent information. This information can help the rehab staff understand the treatment options that will be best for you. The intake will likely include most of the following:
- Addiction history, including the type of drug/s abused, duration of use, and any prior treatment
- Possible co-occurring mental health concerns
- Medical history, including current medications
- Family information related to medical, psychological, and addiction history
- History of trauma, abuse, domestic violence, or other factors that affect both addiction and addiction treatment
We’ll also discuss any prior addiction treatment or psychiatric admissions.
Discuss Payment and Insurance
Any rehab center you contact will ask you for insurance information, and you will want to ask what insurance carriers they accept. You can discuss payment options such as budget payments if you are self-pay or have a high deductible. You can also find out if a sliding fee scale is available if you qualify.
Begin Treatment
This step includes discussing packing needed and permitted items for your stay and transportation if you are traveling a distance for residential treatment. If you enroll in outpatient treatment, you’ll need to remove all substances from your home as well as other triggers. Also, you will want to coordinate your rehab commitments with your other responsibilities, which include contacting your employer or school and arranging support and help at home.
